Now What?
It is like being pushed out of an airplane at 10,000 feet, not knowing if your parachute will open or how to open it.
Job loss or being laid off can be a downright frightening experience. Where will you land? How will you land? What direction do you go in?
Of course, you are by no means alone in your predicament. But, really, that doesn’t help much does it. So thousands of other people got pushed out of the plane along with you. Doesn’t make you feel much better about your own fate does it.
But, it happened. And the question is, Now What?
While fear and despair are common, are they inevitable?
Actually, no. And I’ll briefly relate my story to show I know what I am talking about. I will then outline some ways to cope.
I had run my own business for 9 years. It was a sideline as it didn’t earn enough to support my family of five. But, it did break even and boosted my income, considerably at times. I also had a full-time job telecommuting from home. Great flexibility. Good salary.
Then, it suddenly all exploded and came tumbling down around my ears.
Within the span of a month, I was forced into closing my business, I had to file for bankruptcy, I lost my regular job due to being laid off and I was looking at losing our house.
Yet, I had a heart full of hope and was truly happy. More happy than I had been for a long while.
What happened? I had just learned a new way to look at life.
There was no miracle. Nothing special about me. Anybody can have that same reaction. That includes you.
First, I don’t care what religion you are, if you are an atheist, an agnostic or anything in-between, you must believe in some sort of higher power. You can call that power God or you can call it The Universe. The point is, everything in the Universe is guided by an ultimate equation. Nothing is just random. And whether you refer to that equation as Chaos Theory, Quantum Mechanics, or the Hand of God, the point is that the Ultimate Equation is tipped in favor of humanity, in favor of you, for those that believe in themselves.
The first thing I did was to shift my perspective, my point of observation, my subjective reality, by replacing the negative mantra in my head, with the following positive one:
- I am exactly where I need to be.
- God has everything under control.
- I am worthy of joy, peace and happiness.
It sounds like a simplistic answer, even condescending, but ultimately, it boils down to replacing negative thinking with positive thinking.
Of course, if you have a rocket and the backing of a governmental division, it is possible to go to the moon. However, for the rest of us, it is a bit more complicated. Thus, just saying “Think Positive” is not much help. You need a plan.
Here is that plan…
